This month, we will Get to Know our native Red Maple
Scientific name: Acer rubrum
Red Maple can reach a mature height of 25m. Red maple gets its name from the clusters of small, red buds and flowers that appear on the tree in early spring.
Where is Grows:
Red Maple is found in Southern Ontario, north to the southern edge of the boreal forest. Grows best in wet soils but tolerates some drought. Plant in full sun for best results.
Fact: Red maple sap can be used to make maple syrup.
Note: Light pruning is recommended to maintain a healthy tree. Red maples can be weak and are prone to overcrowding branches.
