Quinte West, a Special Place…

The City of Quinte West holds a special place in our hearts.  Not only is it where the Highway of Heroes starts at CFB Trenton, but over the past four years through our shared values, we have developed a partnership that has brought the community together and made it better today and for future generations.

In 2019, the City pledged $100k over four years to increase the tree canopy and memorialize heroes with living tributes.  The Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign combined with the 2 Billion Tree Program matched that amount, enabling the investment of over $200K in planting projects in the local community. Over 24,000 trees were planted at 8 different project sites including Bain Park, Trenton Greenbelt, and various parks through the Park Tree Replacement Program to name a few. The Trenton ONroute is home to one of the signature Abernethy art installations commemorating the HoH campaign story and completion.

Overall, there were 9 events organized including four volunteer planting events, four media conferences, and photo opportunities, and one residential tree giveaway program - in partnership with Lower Trent Conservation, which helped to engage landowners in the community greening process. We look forward to continuing our alliance with the City of Quinte West as we grow the campaign to honour all types of heroes.
