Planting United - Rotary Clubs of Northumberland County

Rotary International is passionate about the environment. In 2021, it was made one of Rotary’s six official causes.  They formed the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG), to empower Rotary members worldwide to take action to sustain their environment, particularly to stabilize the climate.

Northumberland County Rotary Clubs embraced the challenge.

It was a bright morning, about a year ago when Mike Hurley spoke with Martyn Homer of Rotary Cobourg. Martyn is also Vice Chair of the Environment Committee and he was calling on behalf of 6 Northumberland Rotaries: Cobourg, Port Hope, Northumberland Sunrise, Colborne, Brighton, and Campbellford.

He shared that for the first time, all 6 Rotaries are working as a team to initiate and complete a major project.  Specifically, they are fighting climate change and making a positive environmental impact in their communities. Combined with the help of their local municipalities, District Foundation Rotary 7070, Trees for Life, the funds raised by these Clubs, and their planting volunteers, they have planted 500 trees at 6 sites within Northumberland County. They hope this will be the model for future collaborations and inspire Rotary Clubs everywhere!
