This month, we will Get to Know our native Pin Oak.
Scientific name: Quercus palustris
Pin oak can reach a mature height of 20m. Leaves are glossy green, turning bronze-red each fall. Pin Oaks are known for their drooping and horizontal branches with sharp textured leave.
Where is Grows:
Hardy to zone 4. Pin oak is found in the Carolinian Zone, which is the southern-most portion of Ontario. It has also been planted beyond its natural range as an ornamental tree. Grows in poorly drained soils, in swamps and along streams. Will also thrive in well-drained loamy soil.
Fact: Tolerant of urban conditions.
Facts: Pin Oak does not grow well in shaded conditions. Prefers a location in full sun.
