This month, we will Get to Know our native Basswood (also known as Linden).
Basswood is an ornamental shade tree with a large canopy. Known for its large, heart-shaped leaves.

Where is Grows
Basswood trees are native to eastern North America, from southeast Manitoba east to New Brunswick. Hardy to zones 1-7. Grows best in moist sites. Can grow in full shade or full sun. Prefers rich, well-drained soils.
Facts: Mature height can reach 35m tall. Produces small, fragrant, yellow flowers during late spring / early summer.
Basswood leaves are very rich in nutrients. Mulching fallen Basswood leaves in the fall with a lawnmower can help fertilize your lawn and other trees.
Note: Insects are attracted to Basswood sap. These insects often produce a sticky fluid that can be a nuisance on cars and outdoor furniture. Avoid planting Basswood trees near parking spots and outdoor furniture.
